shadows in the dark

A different
kind of music

Shadows in the Dark originated as the hard rock/metal passion project of Tim Matthews in the early 2010’s. But that’s not exactly where Tim’s musical journey & the true trials of his life began.

In 2020, Tim became a father and settled into his role as a husband and father, while music took a backseat. In 2021, Tim returned to music, working with friend and talented musician, Alex Michel. With their friend, Jason Bradley, on board, the three began working as a band to create new music. Ultimately, Tim needed to step back from the project due to continuing health problems and his role as a father.

In early 2022, Tim was diagnosed with Covid-19 pneumonia. The illness progressed rapidly in February, and near the end of February, doctor’s gave Tim and his wife the news that he would not survive the illness. After a day of grief and prayer with his family, and counsel from his pastor and mentor, Wade Apel, Tim declared that the illness would not take him, that he was going to fight and survive for his daughter and his wife.

The following 2 months were a tumultuous time in the Matthews family, as Tim struggled, clinging to life at times. During the darkest part of his hospitalization, Tim saw a vision, in which he rode upon a horse through a field of golden, wind-tipped reeds, his grandmother, Vivian, at his side. The ride led to a crossroad in which he saw Jesus with his arms held wide. Tim recalls hearing Jesus’ voice offering him either way home, without seeing Jesus speak. Home to heaven or home to his earthly life with his wife and daughter. In this vision, Tim chose home with his wife and daughter.

“I remember waking up with my wife sitting beside the bed, and I could barely speak at the time as I had received a tracheotomy and was on a ventilator,” he says. “I just remember telling her, and knowing without a doubt, that there was nothing to worry about, even in death.”

After 91 days in the hospital from January and into May of 2022, Tim was released from the hospital. The arduous process on recovery began and would continue well into 2023. During that time, Tim decided that he would return to music once again and write an album about his time and trepidation with Covid and made that his resolution for 2024.

Tim re-founded Shadows in the Dark in January, 2024, and began writing almost immediately. As the album came together, Tim worked with other musicians including his father, Stephen, long-time friend Alex Michel, as well as gifted musician and friend, Dawson Armstrong. Later that year, Dawson would join Tim as lead guitarist of Shadows in the Dark. Together, the two began working to finish the vision Tim had begun.

After a quiet July, Shadows in the Dark emerged, re-born as a Christian rock band, and announced the title of the album would be, Dead. Fighter. Survivor. Its release is slated for later in the year, with their first single, Contemplation, coming soon.

1997

Rewind. Indianapolis, IN. Christmas, 1997. Tim Matthews receives his first guitar. A black and white, Strat-style First Act guitar for beginners; a fat necked piece he could barely wrap his hand around. Nevertheless, at 12-years-old, Tim begins taking lessons from Ken Pack, a family friend and proficient guitarist of the band Uncle JuJu. Like many near 12-year-olds, Tim quickly lost interest and stopped taking lessons, a regret he has to this day. However, in 1999, as a 13-year-old, Tim’s life would be turned upside down forever, and learning to play the guitar would become the least of his worries.

1999

In April 1999, Tim was diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease, a chronic kidney disorder. It’s a disease that runs in the Matthews family, one his mother and grandfather also had. “Does this mean I’m going to die?” Tim asked his grandmother, Vivian, who became his legal guardian in 1995 after the passing of his mother. “No,” she replied. “It means you’re going to live.” By July, Tim was undergoing kidney dialysis, a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when kidneys stop working properly. In essence, dialysis treatment would replace the function of the kidneys until Tim was able to receive a kidney transplant. He continued dialysis until he received his first transplant in November 1999 with a kidney donated by family member Marion Pritchett.

In Fall, 2002, now a Junior in high school, Tim fell ill once more and lost his transplanted kidney. He underwent emergency dialysis to ensure his survival. Tim returns to the transplant waiting list to receive a new kidney. As a 16-year-old, the wait was short. In November, he received his 2nd kidney transplant, just 6 weeks after beginning dialysis. “Ironically, I was driving home from an appointment with my kidney nephrologist,” Tim recalls. “When I received a phone call from my transplant coordinator asking if I was ready to come back and receive my new kidney. Not really!” he half-shouts, half cries. The news comes as a shock.. By the next morning, Tim receives his second kidney transplant, a transplant that lasts for much longer.

In 2010, Tim married his high school sweetheart, Charissa, after six years together. Within a month, he was hospitalized with viral meningitis. Three months later, the Matthews family learns that the illness was much worse than described during his hospital stay, and that there wasn’t a reason he should be alive, due to the massive amount of brain swelling endured. After recovering, Tim began writing his own music, and the name, Shadows in the Dark was born. However, the damage done by the meningitis harms Tim’s 2nd transplanted kidney enough that he lost it in spring of 2011. Once more, he begins dialysis. As Tim awaits a 3rd kidney transplant, he continues to play and write music. Tim worked with drummer, Justin Bradley, and guitarist Vince Hanson during the early 2010s, although the project never gained steam.

In September 2012, after 18 months on dialysis, Tim received his 3rd kidney transplant. An avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts, Tim celebrates his transplant by watching Andrew Luck’s first game as QB for the team only hours after his surgery. The first couple of years are an up and down trial of getting the kidney to settle into its role within Tim’s body. He returned to playing baseball in 2013, joining the Indiana Baseball League, where he continues to coach after playing for 7 seasons.

2014-2018

From 2014-2018, Tim’s health improves, and life becomes normal. At Christmas, 2015, Tim & his wife decide they are ready to try to conceive their first child. The family struggles with fertility issues over the course of the next two plus years. “Friends and family would suggest we try fertility treatments, but Charissa and I agreed that it was in God’s hands, and we would be able to have a child when the time was right and when it was meant to be.” During this time, Tim continues his guitar journey and begins to play bass guitar, as well. He also continues to write his own music while once more working with drummer Justin Bradley in the basement of Tim’s home in Noblesville, IN.

In summer 2018, the news they’d hoped for came as Charissa found out she was pregnant. Both are overjoyed by the news. Unfortunately, Tim and his wife discover their baby has no heartbeat when they go for their 3-month check-up. The devastating news drives both into a deep depression, and Tim begins drinking heavily to numb the pain. Fortunately, this dark period in their life doesn’t last long as less than a year later, Tim & Charissa find out they are, once again, pregnant.
